There was spelling.
And 'beginning' is my least favourite word to spell, for some reason. Something about those doubled consonants, though 'assessment' doesn't cause me the same problems at all.
Curious that.
Anyway, the point is that you should be especially careful about spelling in the exams--although some will tell you 'it doesn't matter--it's not assessed', don'tbelieve them. It DOES matter, it matters A LOT because it is part of the general impression that you give to your reader. Clarity in all things, where you can help it.
Of course, it is no good spelling like an angel and not having any ideas in your head, so if it's one or the other go for the ideas.
Oh yes, I do My Homeowrk.....
ReplyDeleteSome very hard things to spell:
- Miscellaneous
- Obsequiousely or is it obsequiously?
- baccalaureate
- Rhythm (All const.)
- supercalifragilisticexpialidocious -Sounds..
- Atrocious
Ha!
Excellent!
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if more subject teachers provided RSS feeds like this. Mr. Moss' twitter isn't quite so informative, however.

Maybe the school could even start a Cherwell Revision wiki with http://www.wikia.com...

I suppose 'necessary' is the typical example of this, but it might become difficult to learn a 'one collar, two socks' for every word with duplicated constants.
'Assessment' reminds me of hissing at the baddies at a pantomime, thus examiners, so that makes it much easier to remember the long 'ss' sounds.
And Dan, it's 'obsequiously' according to my spell checker.
Perhaps we should have a list of most admired words? hardest to spell?
ReplyDeleteEvery time i spell 'difficulty' I remember (rapidly it must be said) 'Mrs D Mrs I Mrs FFI Mrs C Mrs U Mrs LTY' which we used to use as a skipping rhyme back in the eighteenth-century school I attended.
I had subscribed to the RSS feed to this before there were any comments!!!
ReplyDeleteWell done, David, you get extra points.
ReplyDeletei find exaggurate hard to spell for some reason... and just the same struggle with beginning!!
ReplyDeleteYes, perhaps it's those double (or potentially double) Gs?
ReplyDeleteAnother one for me is privileged. Always looks wrong.
Is it just me or is onomatopoeia the hardest word to spell??
ReplyDeleteI have always been rather perturbed with et cetera, from the Latin expression, being spelled sometimes as et caetera or et cætera.
ReplyDeleteYes, onomatopoeia has far too many 'o's for comfort.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Adam, words that don't know what do do with a ligature are always troublesome.Aesthetic has similar issues.
woohoo! I have finally managed to set up a google account, and a blogger account thing so now I can do my homework and write a comment!
ReplyDeleteI find 'happening' hard to spell (double 'p'? double 'n'? double 'p' and 'n'?) and for ages I was convinced 'similar' was spelled 'similiar'.
And is it 'spelled' or 'spelt'? My sister and google both say 'spelt' is a type of wheat, so maybe it is 'spelled'...
'Purile' is a word I like, probably because I only learnt it a few months ago, and I now always look for opportunities to use it :)
'ridicule' and 'frankly' are good too, if a bit old fashioned...
Well done, Eleanor! Good to see you. Sorry to be picky, but isn't it puerile (after the Latin for Boy)
ReplyDeleteAwesome, I can now spell it properly!
ReplyDeleteActually, your spelt/spelled problem reminds me of 'hanged/hung', which perhaps I shall make the subject of tomorrow's post...
